nothing bad happens sneaking into a tiger cage...

Story from CBC.ca

A man is in hospital with serious injuries after sneaking into the Calgary Zoo overnight and approaching the tiger enclosure.

Two men, both aged 27, jumped a 2.4-metre-high barbed wire fence at about 1 a.m. Monday to enter the zoo.

One of the men scaled the outer perimeter safety fence around the tiger enclosure, which is just over a metre high. He didn't enter the tiger exhibit, but approached the inside fence where a two-year-old male Siberian tiger was roaming, zoo officials said Monday.

The tiger, named Vitali, may have hooked the man with a claw and pulled an arm inside the fence, said a zoo veterinarian. The second man, who came to his aid, was also hurt.

The men knew a security guard who worked at the zoo and called her on her cellphone for help.

Security personnel took the men to a zoo office where they were both offered emergency first aid until medical services arrived. The seriously hurt man was then taken to the Foothills hospital.

Motive unknown

Calgary police are investigating and may lay break-and-enter or trespassing charges against the men. Police are unsure of the motive and don't know if alcohol was involved, said acting Staff Sgt. Rick Halford.

"There's no indication that the two offenders were involved in anything else other than just being silly, I suppose," he said.

'If you want to pet live animals, go to Butterfield Acres.'
—Mayor Dave Bronconnier
Grahame Newton, zoo director, said the second fence, which the men didn't scale, is designed to keep the tigers inside their enclosure. It's 4.5 metres high, with a large overhang and an electric component.

"Certainly we will be reviewing it to see whether there is anything that can be done. But in this case here, I think it just simply appears to be a case of two individuals intent on breaching the security and they did it. Unfortunately it resulted it some very serious injuries."

Tiger to remain on exhibit

The tiger, who wasn't hurt, will remain on exhibit, said zoo curator Tim Sinclair-Smith.

"Vitali has certainly done nothing wrong. It's his natural behaviour," he said. "He will go on display as he always has."

Calgary Mayor Dave Bronconnier defended the zoo on Monday, saying it has a good record of taking care of both animals and visitors.

"You can't foresee absolutely every circumstance. Who could ever predict that somebody would … want to get warm and cuddly with a live animal? Just common sense should tell you that is just something you just don't do," he said.

"If you want to pet live animals, go to Butterfield Acres," Bronconnier added, referring to a local petting farm.

japanese dinner

The Yakisoba:
Take stir fry sliced beef and pan fry, add yakisoba sauce for additional flavoring, add diced carrots, zucchini, bok choy, white mushrooms, cabbage, and udon noodles as beef starts to become cooked. do not pre boil noodles. cover your mixture with lid and let the natural steam do the work. Add more yakisoba sauce as needed and spices if desired. Enjoyed with pork dumplings and egg roles. We drank our favorite Japanese beer but also goes well with an ice cold lucky lager.

Enjoy.

italian dinner

Here is an Italian dinner we made:
Started off with a role of fougasse and an olive oil and balsamic dip

the salad:
sliced some vine tomatoes and bocconcini, add basil for a garnish, then drizzle reduced balsamic vinegar & olive oil

the main:
was a tortellini with an artichoke cream sauce, with sun dried tomatoes, and garlic

the dessert:
we cheated here, slightly. the cannoli was from mercato, but we did make the raspberry coulis sauce ourselves. which is basically done by boiling raspberries puree with sugar and water until its sweet enough.

enjoyed with some italian vino (or an ice cold lucky lager)

extremely relaxing

How to Make Yaki Gyoza with your dog watching

2 pizza's

Ok so here are two pizza's we made a short time ago;

The first one has a pesto sauce with chicken breast, artichoke hearts, tomatoes, basil leaves, roasted peppers & red onions, and double smoked bacon. Combine these with your favorite dough recipe!

The second is a fantastic combo of flavors, no sauce, gorgonzola cheese, pears, and pine nuts. Quite possible could be one of the best pizza's you have ever tasted!

Enjoyed always with an ice cold lucky lager!
Bon Appétit!

Man Dies in Vat of Chocolate (what a tasty way to go)

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- A 29-year old man fell into a vat of melted chocolate this morning and died.

The temporary worker, whose name has not yet been released, fell into the vat after a blade used to mix raw chocolate hit him. The accident occured when the worker was loading chocolate into the vat where it is melted and mixed, before being shipped out to produce candy.

The Camden Police Department confirmed the death just before 11 a.m. Prosecutor's spokesman Jason Laughlin says a co-worker attempted to shut off the machine while two workers tried to pull the victim from the 8-foot-deep vat.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has been notified of the incident at 701 North 36th Street.

Camden is located in New Jersey across the Delaware River from Philadelphia

summer nights

delicious summer dinner.
we used spolumbos chicken and apple sausage and grilled it on the bbq, but any sausage would work.
while the sausage is grilling cut up a fresh garlic clove (use as much as you desire) green peppers, onions, and zucchini and sate in a pan with olive oil. cut a french baguette, and grate some mozzarella. When the vegetables and sausage are cooked place them on the open faced baguette and sprinkle the grated cheese on top. combine and cook in bbq until cheese melts.

as for the salad,
take strawberry's, apples, red leaf lettuce, tomato, and green pepper, dice and mix then add balsamic vinegar and olive oil to the desired amount.

enjoy with a cold lucky lager.

lucky ring

good friend of .colourdesign, amy victoria had an (after the fact) humorous ring on her shoulder blade from a misplaced can of lucky regular and a quick slip of the tongue from a pooch that put her in the grass. we were all caught off guard by the protrusion the can made rather than a dent.

Flow Festival

Flowatholon is back again this year. The name has changed to Flow Festival (rolls of the tongue a little better)
Same great outdoor party, Djs and Bands, but we've also moved to a little farther out of Calgary, a beautiful location in the mountains.

As you probably know I'm helping organize this event and it means a lot to me.
Please check out the website, www.flowfestival.ca
As well, the home page has links to discussions and film - these will begin to grow in content shortly so check back...
After checking it out please pass it along to people you know would like this kind of thing.

It's a free party, created on people donating time, money, and talents. Pretty astounding actually.

You'll find an invite attached to this email, please forward it along to anyone who think would want to come.
We are not doing a mass poster or facebook ad campaign but relying on people passing it on to those they know have something to offer to an event like this.
Let me know if you personally can contribute to the creation of this awesome event - anything, small or big...

Classy Wienies

If you are torn between a nice pasta dinner or some nice juicy wieners, just create a new take on the classic 'Kraft Dinner and Hot Dogs'. It is just a simple as that. All you have to do is chop up a few hot dogs and boil them with any pasta of your choice.

Once boiled, strain and add a little butter and olive oil (not too much though, you don't want your wienies sliding around). Season to perfection, add a garnish and you will have some classy wieners.

This meal is sure to impress, especially when served with a nice room temperature Lucky Lager.

GSD Vancouver Vs. Calgary

Here is a link to Vancouver's GSD which had an estimated 2500 attendees. No sign of police interference to the slightest degree of what Calgary had.

Unfortunately the re-decoration of the front yard was unsuccessful. Someone thought one of the planters wasn't working where it was and decided to put it here instead. I liked it better next to the others on the front steps but I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Calgary Herald + GSD article

From Today's Calgary Herald.

"CALGARY - The longest day of the year proved even longer for some Calgary police officers stuck dealing with a rash of mischief from a group of skateboarders on Sunday.

Go Skateboarding Day, an annual event that promotes the urban sport globally, had police working to respond to reports of minor vandalism and traffic safety through the day. Hundreds of skateboarders met on 17th Avenue S. W. and at Olympic Plaza to celebrate the sport, causing headaches for the police.

"It was resource intensive and included (our use of) the helicopter," said duty inspector Vic Trickett.

"We had skateboarders going up the wrong way on streets and avenues, going through red lights, causing a great deal of disruption to the regular traffic flow. In my opinion, they were endangering themselves and endangering others."

There were reports of skateboarders in the vicinity of a bus when its rear windows were smashed in, but neither police nor Calgary Transit pointed the blame at skateboarders.

It happened near 5th Avenue and 2nd Street S. W. at 12:30 p. m.

"One of our bus windows was broken by someone or another, but we don't want to attribute it to skateboarders because we don't know who's responsible," said Calgary Transit spokesman Ron Collins.

Some skateboarders took over a downtown intersection with makeshift ramps, stopping traffic on all sides.

"They actually closed an intersection and used that as an area to skateboard in," Trickett said. "So an investigation will ensue and we will look into all of these things."

According to a city report, more than 10,000 people skateboard in Calgary, more than the number who play organized hockey.

Go Skateboarding Day was created in 2003 by the International Association of Skateboard Companies to promote the sport.

Calgary skateboarders have celebrated the event each year since its inception, but have had a tough time shaking the stigma associated with the sport because of a small group of unruly skaters, said Christopher Ludwig, a sales associate at The Source Skateboard and Snowboard Shop, which promotes the event locally.

"Almost everyone has a positive attitude, because it only hinders our sport when kids go out and vandalize," he said.

"But when you get a caravan of 300 kids together, it's a coin toss to know what will happen.""
